A behind-the-scenes look at SCV filming

Over the years, the Santa Clarita Valley has become a popular filming destination for a number of productions, and much of this is because of the number of diverse filming locations it offers, all of which reside in the “30-mile Zone.”
The 30-mile Zone, or TMZ, as it’s also known, is an area recognized by local and state tax subsidies encompassing Hollywood and its surroundings, including the SCV, which makes it more “film-friendly.”
“Santa Clarita is definitely no secret in the production world … Historically, we’ve had filming going back to the Silent Era, with William S. Hart and Charlie Chaplin, all the way to the Golden Age,” said Evan Thomason, economic development associate with the city of Santa Clarita. “We can double as anywhere.”

Managing a family-run movie ranch might sound like a dream job. However, for Steve Arklin, Jr., ranch manager of Rancho Deluxe in Sand Canyon, the responsibility also comes with long days.

“Some of the less glamorous parts of running a movie ranch would definitely be the long hours,” he said. “Sometimes throughout the season, I will have to go several days without any sleep and more commonly I see 20-plus hour days. I guess that’s what happens when you turn your home into a movie ranch.”

Owner/Manager, Rancho Deluxe Filming Locations
Located in the Santa Clarita filming community of Los Angeles, California, Rancho Deluxe is a premier movie ranch location with over 200 acres of property nestled in the mountains of Placerita Canyon near Melody Ranch, Sable Ranch, and Disney’s Golden Oak studios.

How has the production side of the film and television industry changed in Santa Clarita since you became involved in Rancho Deluxe?

The production side of filming has changed in many ways since I first began working in the industry. In a very short amount of time, the film and television industry has taken off very strong across Santa Clarita, the nation and even the world. You see new companies, such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc., really opening a whole new perspective in technology when it comes to the new trend in the technology world.
I still remember not too long ago when these companies started and took a gamble, and in a short amount of time, have opened new windows for the entire industry to enter.
I think that Santa Clarita is ground zero when it comes to the film industry and we are just scratching the surface.
What are some of the significant factors that drive filming in the SCV?

In Ventura County, there is Big Sky Movie Ranch in Simi Valley. The Antelope Valley has Four Aces and Club Ed, with their collection of diners, motel rooms and gas stations.

But it’s in the Santa Clarita Valley where the biggest concentration of ranches is found. There are eight movie ranches located within the city boundaries, and in total, more than a dozen scattered throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. These include the Golden Oak Ranch, owned by Walt Disney Co. on nearly 900 acres along Placerita Canyon Road; Blue Cloud Movie Ranch; Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio; Rancho Maria and Sable Ranch; and A Rancho Deluxe, on 250 acres just up the road from Golden Oak.

Last year, FilmL.A. counted 38,284 production days of location filming in the city of Los Angeles, unincorporated L.A. County and other jurisdictions. It was the second-highest total on record, with 2016 the highest with 39,627 shoot days. FilmL.A. President Paul Audley credited the state’s production tax incentives for bringing out-of-state productions back to L.A. and for enticing new productions to remain here.
